INTRODUCTION TO THE SNODGRASS SOURCE BOOKS The state source books were created by Charlou Dolan. She began this massive project ca. 1986, organizing and typing the accumulation of Snodgrass research when she got "boxes and boxes" of files from Scott F. Hosier (he was Editor of The MACE 1978-1986). Those files formed the nucleus of the "source books". During her tenure as Editor of The MACE, 1987-1993 and since, Charlou has been hard at it: gathering and entering into the source books Snodgrass data, making trips to courthouses and libraries across the country, collecting files & family data from past & present members of The Snodgrass Clan Society, as well as soliciting information from many other Snodgrass researchers. The source books are one of the best tools available to anyone researching Snodgrass. One for nearly every state, each is organized by county and within each county, info is arranged by date. These source books contain a wealth of Snodgrass research. Census readings - wills - deeds - misc. court records - marriages - deaths - obits - histories - Bible records - even queries found in genealogical publications ... all Snodgrass! Charlou's comments on the collected data are shown as < . > throughout. Any comments marked [ . ] or [vss -] were added by me, Violet "Suzie" Snodgrass Schoolcraft beginning in 1997, the result of my reading the source books and tracing families since I first joined The Snodgrass Clan Society in 1993. PLEASE keep in mind that the source books are meant to be a reference work - they give us an idea of what has already been found. Perhaps more importantly, they show us where to look next for what is yet to be done! REMEMBER, extractions & transcriptions, notes & comments may have errors or may be missing certain portions of the original material. ALWAYS refer to the original source material whenever possible, using the source books as a starting point to guide you in your individual research. If it is SNODGRASS, we at The Snodgrass Clan Society continue to collect it! Please send items (with sources cited!) you want to share with others to: Paul D. Snodgrass (Editor of The MACE since 1993) E-mail: paulsnodgrass@cox.net and to me, Suzie Snodgrass Schoolcraft E-mail: snodgras@gdi.net ************************* ALABAMA SOURCE BOOK -- SNODGRASS FAMILY Created by Charlou Dolan with annotations by V. War pension application of John Bryant: John Bryant S12,299, Alabama #31,601 $20/year, Issued 5 March 1839. John Bryant's file mentions Franklin County TN as a former residence. His application papers are summarized here. John Bryant believes he was born 5 Nov. 1754 in Albemarle County Va., but record of his age was destroyed. He served as a resident of Buckingham County Va., under Capt. Anthony Wenston and John Mosley. He saw Cornwallis surrender. After the war he lived in Lincoln County, Ky.; Adair County Ky.; Lincoln County, Tenn.; Jackson County, Ala. for 12 years: Franklin County, Tenn.; back to Jackson County, Ala., where he resided in 1838. Possible character references were: Ludwell L. Rector; Thomas Fondron; Robert Proctor Sr.; William L Snodgrass; Benjamin Snodgrass. Actual vouchers were clergyman Charles Roach and Ludwell Rector. Phillip Winfrey of Adair County, Ky., stated in 1838 that he had become acquainted with Bryant in Buckingham County, Va., over 60 years earlier and served with him. Bryant moved to Lincoln County Ky., in 1795 and Winfrey followed. Both later moved to Adair County and about 1808 to 1818 Bryant moved away. ================== [vss - 1840 from a copy of a census index - need actual readings; where are Benjamin Snodgrass, John Snodgrass, Thomas Snodgrass?] 1840 Jackson Co AL Census p. 77 Joseph Snodgrass p. 78 David Snodgrass [vss - b. ca 1804 VA, d. 1882 TX; 1850 Titus Co TX] p. 94 William Snodgrass ------------------------------------- 1850 Jackson Co AL Census Dist. 20, #3/3: Thomas Snodgrass 43-M-VA farmer, $3000 [1807 VA - 1868 AL] Caroline Snodgrass 38-F-VA Elizabeth Snodgrass 16-F-AL [b. 6-16-1833, d. 1-12-1863; m. Bellefonte 1st County Seat (Jackson Co. AL) by: Carlus Page contributor: chaynes@HiWAAY.net History of Jackson Co. [need publ. date] Chapter XXVII, Pages 132-134 Bellefonte was the 1st town incorporated in Jackson Co. 2 days after it had been selected as the County Seat of Jackson Co., the Legislature passed an Act to incorporate the town (12/15/1821). The town of Bellefonte, was to be established & incorporated including 60 acres, agreeable to the plan of said town. An election was to be held at the house of John Hampton in said town, on the 1st Monday in February next, and on the same day in every year thereafter, to commence at 10:00 a.m. and close at 2:00 p.m., for the purpose of electing by ballot 5 councillors, inhabitants of said town, who shall serve for the term of 1 year after they have been elected; the election shall be conducted and managed by a justice of peace and 2 householders in said town;...and the said councillors shall be, and they are hereby constituted a body corporate, by the name and style of "The Intendant and Council of the Town of Belle-Fonte" and by that name they and their successors in office, shall be capable in law, of suing and being sued, etc."...are constituted a corporate body. (For some reason unknown, the election was not held until the 2nd Monday of Feb. 1822. The Legislature passed an act Jan.1, 1823, making the election legal.) Different places in the county were anxious to secure the location of the county seat. Stephen Carter and George W. Higgins gave the land for the use of the town as a county seat, and the contract was to run for 100 years; but since the papers were burned just after the Civil War, the heirs can't make claim for said land. The Councillors sold lots, and the town grew rapidly and did a thriving business for many years. Some of the 1st families to settle here were: Stephen CARTER, the 1st Clerk of Circuit Court of Jackson Co.; William HURT, Moses JONES, Carter O. HARRIS, Colonel WHITE, who owned a large plantation; 4 SNODGRASS brothers, AMBRESTERS, WILBURNS, RECTORS, LANCASTERS, and NORWOODS. The 1st merchants were Alvah FINLEY, James L. CARTER, W. F. HURT, William AUSTIN, C. B. ROUNDTREE, and Mr. MADDOX. James HAWK ran a blacksmith shop. Nelson and Charley ROBINSON were in the drug business. Mr. FROST was a cabinet maker. There were 2 brick stores, one on each corner of the north side of the public square, with 5 or 6 frame stores between. The courthouse, jail and 2 dwellings were built of brick. For many years, there was only 1 church building in the town. It was erected by the Methodists about 1839. All denomin- ations had preaching in it occasionally. A Cumberland Church was built a year or 2 before the Civil War. Both houses were frame buildings and were used by the Federal Army who camped here during the winters of 1863-1864. Ministers of the Methodists were ADAMS and HICKMAN. BROONE and STOCKTON were Cumberland Ministers. The leading physicians of the county resided here and had a wide practice. Dr. MORRISON died here. Dr. STERNE who was the 1st president of the county Medical Society, died here. Dr. HAINES spent his last days in this town. Dr. COOK lived here, moved to Kentucky. Dr. LOUIS moved on to Madison CO. AL. 1st school house was a long, one-room frame building called the Academy. Teachers included: BROONE, ROBINSON, MADDOX, and others. Later, the people saw the need of better school facilities, so they erected a 2-story brick Masonic Hall in the early 1850's and used the lower story for schools. The 1st teacher in this new building was a Miss FINLEY, who had just finished school in Athens, AL. The upper story was used by the Masonic Lodge #82. This was the 1st Lodge organized in the county. The law was considered one of the greatest professions in that day, and many of the most eminent lawyers either resided in Bellefonte or practiced in the courts here. It is not generally known that Leroy Pope WALKER, who was Secretary of War in Jefferson DAVIS' Confederate Cabinet, lived a while in Bellefone and practiced law. He ordered the shot which started the Civil War. Nelson ROBINSON, who came from Virginia, lived and died here. William ROBINSON, Albert RUSSELL, who came from Huntsville; Patrick RAGLAND of Virginia, who was Register in Chancery and Secretary of State; Edward WALLACE, John and Billie NORWOOD, John and Hugh PARKS, Henry Clay BRADFORD, sometimes called the silver-tongued orator, practiced law in the brick courthouse in Bellefonte. Other noted men who lived here were: Daniel MARTIN, who ran a stage coach from Bellefonte to Gunter's Landing; Robert T. SCOTT, who is so well known in the county and for whom Scottsboro is named, ran an inn or tavern; Congressman WILLIAMSON; R. W. COBB, who was never defeated for Congress, had a residence in town. His lovely wife was a Miss ALLISON of Madison Co. AL. They had no children. After the County Seat was moved to Scottsboro, the town gradually lost its business and finally ceased to be in the 1880's. The first one I mentioned up there is the Snodgrass Cemetery, the land it is on is rented by a hunting club and was posted no tresspassing and we had to walk forever to find it. I was told by a man that belongs to the hunting club it was there. There is a handwritten book at our library written in 1959 that I found a listing of the cemetery. When I go back to the library I will see who the other Snodgrass' are that are buried there. That is where I found out it was called the Snodgrass Cemetery. At one time the Snodgrass' owned all the land where all these cemeteries are. Which is alot of land. I will keep my eye out for other Snodgrass' when I am in some of these other cemeteries and will let you know who they are. We go to cemeteries in corn fields, soybean fields and cow pastures that are long forgotten. Some of them we can't get to until the crops are in and the snakes have sought other resting places for the winter.
